No Cox Plate For Tryster

Charlie Appleby | Racing Post

After initially indicating he would accept an invitation to the G1 Cox Plate with Tryster (Ire) (Shamardal), Godolphin trainer Charlie Appleby told Racing.com the 5-year-old gelding will instead target feature races in Japan and Hong Kong later this year. Appleby is still set to be well represented during the spring carnival.

“Tryster did not enter quarantine in Newmarket overnight with stablemates Scottish, Second Wave, Oceanographer and Qewy, and he will therefore not be contesting the G1 Cox Plate,” Appleby told Racing.com. “There is a very good program of races including the G1 Tenno Sho in Japan in October and the Hong Kong International Cup at Sha Tin in December, which are better suited for the horse before his winter campaign in Dubai.

Appleby added, “His Highness Sheikh Mohammed maintains strong interest in winning the Cox Plate and the desire to have Godolphin runners compete is as strong as ever, and we will hopefully be back with a horse in the future.”
