No 'Catching' This BC Winner in Herecomesthebride

Catch a Glimpse | Adam Coglianese

She isn't Tepin (Bernstein)–not just yet in any event–but Catch a Glimpse sat a trip and turned in a performance in Saturday's GIII Herecomesthebride S. reminiscent of her champion stablemate's in the GIII Endeavour S. two weeks back to get her sophomore season off on a high note.

The chestnut was entered for a 5 1/2-furlong turf maiden at Saratoga July 30 and was allowed to take her spot in that field even though the race was washed onto a sloppy main track and showed a bit of early pace before tailing off to finish a midpack fifth. Sent to her trainer's Woodbine base, the $75,000 Keeneland September purchase wired a grassy Aug. 22 allowance prep for the GII Natalma S., besting Pulled the Goalie (Parading) by 1 3/4 lengths, then really took it to her rivals in the Natalma three weeks later, quickening up nicely to thrash TDN Rising Star Gamble's Ghost (Ghostzapper) by a resounding five lengths. Forced to deal with a Keeneland turf course that had plenty of juice in it from early-week rains, Catch a Glimpse sat a stalking trip, was roused to the front outside the furlong marker and held off the European-trained duo of Alice Springs (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and Nemoralia (More Than Ready) to win the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf by three-parts of a length.

Drawn widest in this field of eight, Catch a Glimpse was alertly out of the stalls, but the previously undefeated Lira got the first call and Vieja Luna (Street Hero) showed the most initiative and led under the line for the first time. Florent Geroux would not let that one get too far away and the duo pulled a handful of lengths clear of Lira. Positions remained unchanged through the middle furlongs, but Geroux allowed Catch a Glimpse to put her head in front at the third corner, then asked for a bit more run when Lira came after her in earnest midway on the turn. The odds-on chalk drifted a bit wide into the stretch as Lira tried to make a race of it, but Catch a Glimpse sprinted her final five-sixteenths of a mile in a wicked :28.76 to put the race well and truly out of reach.

“I think she was going so fast around the turn she kind of bore out a little,” assistant trainer Norman Casse reasoned about the filly's actions at the head of the stretch. “She's still learning and not 100% professional. But she's obviously very talented and she'll get even better as she goes on. It was good [return] and we're excited to have her back, and we look to moving forward from here.”
