Stuart S. Janney III homebred Ironicus (Distorted Humor–Meghan's Joy, by A.P. Indy) has been retired and will stand at Claiborne Farm in Paris, Kentucky next year, the farm announced Thursday. He will stand for $7,500.

A winner of the GII Bernard Baruch H. in course record time and also a victor of that term's GII Longines Dixie S. in 2015, Ironicus captured this year's GIII Fort Marcy S. and was a strong second to Flintshire (GB) (Dansili {GB}) in the GI Woodford Reserve Manhattan S. at Belmont Park June 11. He followed that effort with another runner-up performance, beaten only a head to Miss Temple City (Temple City), in the GI Shadwell Turf Mile S. at Keeneland Oct. 8 and was a credible fourth behind Tourist (Tiznow) in the GI Breeders' Cup Mile at Santa Anita Park Nov. 5. The 5-year-old also ran second in the 2015 GII Fourstardave H. at Saratoga. He retires with a record of 15-6-6-1 and earnings of $1,148,790.

“This talented homebred had a solid race career as a three-time graded stakes winner and multiple Grade I performer,” Claiborne Farm representative Bernie Sams said. “We believe his accomplishments on the racetrack, as well as his impressive bloodlines make him an exciting stallion prospect.”

Out of a MSP dam, the Shug McGaughey trainee is a half-brother to GSWs Norumbega (Tiznow), On Leave (War Front), Hunting (Coronado's Quest), Quiet Harbor (Silver Deputy) and SW Seal Cove (Strong Hope). His second dam is a half-sister to MGSW & MGISP Yell (A.P. Indy), MGSWs Roar (Forty Niner) and Blare of Trumpets (Fit to Fight) and GI Futurity S. hero Eastern Echo (Damascus). His fourth dam is blue hen Glowing Tribute (Graustark).

“I think with his racing ability and pedigree, he is an outstanding value at $7,500,” McGaughey said. “He always gave great effort and I enjoyed every morning I got to train him. He deserved to win a Grade I and certainly had the talent.”

Ironicus is available for inspection by appointment.
