She needed a second wind to get there, but find it she did. Consequent (Into Mischief–Cognitive, by Uncle Mo) steadily closed the gap to overhaul the top pair late in the lane to win the GII Starlet Stakes.
She entered this race with only one prior start to her name and it was a half-length victory at first-asking Nov. 14 at this venue. The Juddmonte-homebred put in a couple of strong works under her belt since that graduation, and the betting public liked her to the tune of 5-2 odds behind her stablemate, 2-5 favorite Nimah (Gun Runner), in this stakes debut.
In no rush to push the issue as Cal-bred Cashed (I'll Have Another) showed the way through an opening split in :23.52 and four furlongs in :48.01, Consequent was well-placed to strike from third but lost ground on the leader when Nimah ranged up on that one's outside heading into the final bend. Her hole on the rail closed on her, and Consequent was forced to take the overland route for room.
With the top pair still going at it after six panels in 1:12.46, they swung into the lane with a sizeable margin on the eventual winner. Cashed and Nimah made contact on a couple occasions during the stretch drive, and it opened the door for Consequent, who was rolling on their outside with a full-head of steam. Riding that second wind right over the top, she secured her first black-type victory by a clear margin over Cashed in second and Nimah in third.
The final time was 1:44.03. It was Bob Baffert's record ninth-consecutive Starlet win.
After the race, there was a stewards' inquiry into the contact between the back two-thirds fo the trifecta, but they unanimously agreed that the bumping did not warrant a change in order.
“I was quite comfortable sitting behind the speed,” said winning rider Kazushi Kimura. “She had the two-turn experience and that gave me confidence. She responded in the stretch with a big stride.”
“That looked pretty good right there,” said assistant trainer Mike Marlow. “[Consequent] needed all that stretch for sure. She's still pretty green. She was tough to saddle, but she's going to figure it out. She's going to be good and it looks like more distance will be even better for her.”
When asked about Nimah's performance, Marlow said, “She might have needed the race since it was her first time going long. She was in a good position, but just got a little tired.”

Pedigree Notes:
Consequent is the second stakes horse for her dam Cognitive behind elder full-sister Show Card, who was exported to Great Britain this year. From four fillies to the races for the mare, three have gotten their picture taken and one is placed–the 3-year-old Whitethorn (Not This Time). Her fifth filly is a yearling by Constitution and the lone colt is a 2025 full-brother to that one. Cognitive, who hails from the female line which produced MGISW Dream Rush and her Grade I daughters and granddaughters, was bred to Elite Power for 2026.
Said elite family includes names such as GISW Dreaming of Julia (A.P. Indy), herself dam of 'TDN Rising Stars, presented by Hagyard' two-time champion Malathaat (Curlin) and her full-sister GSW Julia Shining. The tally also counts GSW Dream Pauline (Tapit); SW Atreides (Medaglia d'Oro); and GSW Song of Spring (Spring At Last).
