Harper's Corner Wires Schuylerville, Becomes First Stakes Winner for Speaker's Corner

Harper's Corner | Sarah Andrew

Harper's Corner (Speaker's Corner) became the first stakes winner for her freshman sire (by Street Sense) with a 12-1 upset in Friday's opening day Schuylerville S. at Saratoga.

Sent to the front by Paco Lopez, she cleared the field of six and clicked off splits of :22.02 and :45.18. With Lopez looking around for the competition at the top of the stretch, Harper's Corner kept on finding down the lane and let it out a notch despite switching to her left lead late to defeat the maiden of one start Voyager (Justify) by 5 1/4 lengths.

Harper's Corner, a $30,000 FTKOCT yearling turned $70,000 OBSAPR breezer, was also an impressive front-running winner on debut at Laurel Park June 12. She is the lone winner from the first crop of the 2022 GI Carter H. winner.

“Delighted, not shocked,” winning trainer Cathal Lynch said. “I'm delighted. I think she's a real filly. She showed everything at home that she was doing very, very good. We try not to get in their way.”

He continued, “Paco (Lopez) seems to think she'll go longer. She worked at Fair Hill there last week on the turf track. Then we gave her a breeze up a hill, and it seemed to get her a little tighter. Her first race, I told him that she probably wasn't as tight as she needed to be, but I think she's a little tighter now.”

On a potential start in the GIII Adirondack Aug. 2 at Saratoga, he added: “I'll talk to (owner) Charlie (Biggs) and we'll go from there. Paco, he didn't seem to think distance was an issue, so fingers crossed she comes back OK, and we'll go from there.”
