Harper's Corner became the first winner for her freshman stallion (by Street Sense) with an eye-catching debut victory Friday afternoon at Laurel Park.
Crunched into 17-5 from an 8-1 morning line off a sound-enough worktab at Fair Hill, the $30,000 Fasig-Tipton October yearling and $70,000 OBS April breezer dipped at the break, but quickly recovered and soon opened a few lengths on her rivals.
With Paco Lopez back at the site of his recent victory aboard Napoleon Solo (Liam's Map) in the GI Preakness Stakes and looking for the competition under his left arm, the dark bay was asked to extend in upper stretch and lengthened clear under a minimum amount of urging to graduate by an impressive 7 3/4 lengths.
Harper's Corner is a maternal granddaughter of GIII Royal North Stakes victress Nikkis Smartypants (Smarty Jones) and descends from the female family of Grade I winner Diamondrella (GB) (Rock of Gibraltar {Ire}). Toscana was most recently bred to Epicenter.
Trained for Godolphin by Bill Mott, Speaker's Corner went on an impressive winning streak at four in 2022, winning the GIII Fred W. Hooper Stakes and GII Gulfstream Park Mile ahead of a 4 1/2-length romp in the GI Carter Handicap at seven furlongs. Third to Flightline in the 2022 GI Met Mile, Speaker's Corner was retired to the breeding shed the following season and is represented by 111 juveniles from his first crop. Speaker's Corner stood the 2026 breeding season for a fee of $10,000 at Darley America.
