Showing some resemblance to his much-heralded sire, Flight Command (Flightline) never looked anything but a winner in Thursday's fifth race at Aqueduct, becoming the second winner for his freshman sire (by Tapit), the first in North America, and his first 'TDN Rising Star, presented by Hagyard'.
The 6-5 favorite never gave this field a chance, rocketing out from his rail draw under a confident Manny Franco and opening up a huge gap before the rest of the maidens had barely left their stalls.
Setting the fractions in this 5 1/2-furlong sprint, the Rudy Rodriguez trainee was largely unpressured with only Hurricane Mo (Mo Donegal) in the same zip code off the turn. Showing just a touch of his inexperience, Flight Command was shaken up to switch leads and hold his lane but opened up at will as Franco took a knowing look over his shoulder at the furlong pole.
Geared down into the final sixteenth, the winning margin only continued to grow as Flight Command led in Hurricane Mo by as much as he pleased for the debut win.
“He was doing great [coming into the race],” Rodriguez told the TDN. “A very classy horse.”
Flightline's first winner came June 13 in Japan.
On the track, Flightline's career certainly needs little introduction. The son of Tapit, a 'Rising Star' himself, went a perfect six-for-six in his career, picking up wins in the GI Breeders' Cup Classic, the GI TVG Pacific Classic, the GI Hill 'N' Dale Metropolitan Handicap and the GI Runhappy Malibu Stakes before retiring to Lane's End for the 2023 breeding season.
Machmer Hall purchased Stonetonic as an un-raced 4-year-old at the 2022 Keeneland November Sale for $400,000. Carrying to Yaupon at that sale, the daughter of MGSW/GISP Stonetastic produced that filly in 2023 before visiting Flightline. This is the family of MGISW 'TDN Rising Star' Gina Romantica (Into Mischief) along with GISW and sire Gift Box (Twirling Candy) and MGSW Special Forces (Candy Ride {Arg}).
LSU Stables, via Northshore Bloodstock who signed the ticket, had to go only to $275,000 at this year's OBS March Sale for Flight Command who worked his furlong in :10.0.
Stonetonic returned to Flightline for a full-sibling in 2025 but unfortunately lost that foal and was covered by Constitution for 2026.
