SPICE IS NICE (f, 3, Curlin">Curlin–Dame Dorothy {GISW, $749,740}, by Bernardini) romped by 12 lengths to earn the 'TDN Rising Star' tag in her Gulfstream unveiling Jan. 12. Runner-up to Tonalist's Shape (Tonalist in that venue's GII Davona Dale S. Feb. 29, the $1.05-million KEESEP purchase was fifth to divisional leader Swiss Skydiver (Daredevil) in the GII Gulfstream Park Oaks last time Mar. 28. Hammered down to 1-2 favoritism to get back in the winner's circle in this class drop, the chestnut stumbled a step exiting the outside stall, but quickly recovered and stalked from off the fence in second as Say Moi (Union Rags) clocked a :23.41 opening quarter. Maintaining that position through a half-mile in :46.90, Spice is Nice drew even with the leader entering the far turn and battled that foe until mid-stretch, where she kicked clear with ease to win by 2 3/4 lengths. Her Grade I-winning dam Dame Dorothy, who RNA'd for $3.1-million at last term's KEENOV sale, is also responsible for a yearling colt by Medaglia d'Oro and an Uncle Mo colt born May 2 of this year.
