'Chrono' Cracks the Classic Code

Third in both the G1 Japanese 1000 Guineas and the G1 Japanese Oaks in April and May, respectively, the third time proved the charm for Chrono Genesis (Jpn) (Bago {Fr}), who saluted in the final Japanese filly Classic of the year-the G1 Shuka Sho at Kyoto on Sunday. Tabbed the 6-1 fourth choice, the grey settled firmly in midpack in the strung out field as Contra Check (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) briefly showed the way before Beach Samba (Jpn) (Kurofune) took over. The Sunday Racing colourbearer began to improve up to fifth on the backstretch, and was full of run entering the last bend. Trapped behind a wall of horses, a gap opened at the head of the straight and the sophomore miss built up a full head of steam as she took aim at Beach Samba. She blitzed that foe inside the final 200 metres and stretch clear to win by two lengths over Curren Bouquetd'or (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) and Shigeru Pink Dia (Jpn) (Daiwa Major {Jpn}), who were separated by 1 1/2 lengths.

“I was able to race her in an ideal position while eyeing Danon Fantasy in front,” said winning hoop Yuichi Kitamura. “She was responding really well at the fourth corner so I was able to make a bid with confidence. I am grateful for having been able to ride the filly since her debut. I'm really glad that I was able to deliver a good result.”

A winner of her first two trips to the post including the Listed Ivy S. at Tokyo last October, Chrono Genesis ran second in the G1 Hanshin Juvenile Fillies on Dec. 9, but made her 3-year-old bow a winning one in the G3 Daily Hai Queen Cup on Feb. 11. Given a roughly two-month break, she returned to run third in both of the earlier filly Classics in Japan.

Pedigree Notes

Already a half-sister to G1 Victoria Mile heroine Normcore (Jpn) (Harbinger {GB}), Chrono Genesis is the second top-flight winner for her sire after Big Week (Jpn). Her second dam is a full-sister to MSW Fusaichi Airedale (Jpn) (Sunday Silence) and a half to SW Bellagio (Jpn) (Mejiro Ryan {Jpn}).
