Captain Rio Mare Tops NZB Broodmares

New Zealand Bloodstock's two-day National Weanling, Broodmare and Mixed Bloodstock Sale drew to a close on Tuesday with its broodmare session. With 109 broodmares sold, the aggregate rounded out at NZ$1,303,300. The session's average was down 31.7% at NZ$11,957, while the median dropped 11.1% to NZ$4,000. The clearance rate dropped to 75% from 91% on this day last year. Topping the session was Windsor Park Stud's Fledgling (NZ) (Captain Rio {GB}) (lot 374), a half-sister to the G1 Diamond S. winner Fully Fledged {NZ}) (Align {NZ}) who was offered in foal to Charm Spirit (Ire). She is already the dam of the stakes-winning Bassett (NZ) (Savabeel {Aus}), and was hammered down to agent Ric Wylie for NZ$87,500.

“I bought her for Australian clients,” Wylie said. “The price was fair but that was my last bid. Bassett is a serious racehorse, so she's doing the job right.”

Windsor Park representative Steve Till said, “Our client will be happy. The reserve was very realistic to help the sale along. The foal she is carrying could be quite valuable.”

The session also closed out the weanling trade that had begun Monday, with a top price in that category of NZ$80,000 paid by Lyndhurst Farm for Brighthill Farm's son of Iffraaj (GB) (lot 258). Maluka Thoroughbreds also shelled out NZ$70,000 for lot 270, a son of New Zealand's hot young sire Tavistock (NZ).

The sale concluded with gross receipts of NZ$5,295,850 for 361 lots sold at a clearance rate of 83% (down from 91% last year). The cumulative average dipped 26.6% to NZ$14,670, while the median was down 37.5% to NZ$5,000.
