Biscuits Defends Shaheen Title

Joel Rosario aboard Mind Your Biscuits | Coady

Only eight horses went to post for the G1 Dubai Golden Shaheen, but it produced a thrilling finish which saw an American-trained trifecta, but not in the order that many people would have envisaged. It was last year's winner Mind Your Biscuits (Posse) who pulled off a victory that looked most unlikely for the majority of the six furlong contest as he prevailed over X Y Jet (Kantharos) and the favourite Roy H (More Than Ready). In a another track-record breaking time of 1:10.12, Mind Your Biscuits had plenty to do in last place from the word go as Jordan Sport (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) and X Y Jet dueled for the lead as Roy H was trapped out wide in third. As the field approached the straight Jordan Sport's early fractions began to take their toll as X Y Jet forged on looking the likely winner with Roy H failing to change gear in third. Meanwhile Mind Your Biscuits entered the home straight still last of the bunch and at least eight lengths off the leaders. At the furlong marker the winner was still only fifth with about five lengths to make up, but Joel Rosario was beginning to get a serious rally from the Chad Summers-trained entire and he started to devour the deficit. With 50 metres to run Mind Your Biscuits got to the tail of X Y Jet and with such momentum built he sailed by the gallant runner-up to snatch the verdict by a head. Roy H kept on well in third but never looked like winning. “He is an unbelievable horse, an amazing animal,” trainer Chad Summers said afterwards. “We came out with a mission this year. We came up on top today. Never give up, keep a horse happy, that's the most important thing,” he added.

Having partnered the 5-year-old to win the race in 2017, jockey Joel Rosario was quick to start thinking of a hat trick in 2019 and commented, “He is a very nice horse, he gets quicker with time. He can come back here and win it again.”

Mind Your Biscuits announced himself a sprinter of the highest class when beating Sharp Azteca (Freud) in the G1 Malibu S. at Santa Anita in 2016 for trainer Robert Falcone. Chad Summers, who was originally part of the horse's ownership group, then took over the training of the triple Group 1 winner and has done a fine job since. Apart from his three-length success at Meydan 12 months ago, Mind Your Biscuits also posted a victory in the GII Belmont Sprint Championship S. last July to go with top-level placings in the GI Breeders' Cup Sprint and the GI Cigar Mile H. before prepping for Saturday's win when second in an allowance optional claiming race at Gulfstream Feb. 9.

Pedigree Notes…

Mind Your Biscuits is now the highest-earning New York bred in history and by far the highest achiever of his dam Jazzmane (Toccet)'s three runners, who are all winners. Although Mind Your Biscuits is the only Group 1 winner in three generations of his pedigree he is related to a number of stakes winners including Canada's champion 3-year-old filly of 2006 Kimchi (Langfuhr), who is a half-sister to Jazzmane. Following Mind Your Biscuits, Jazzmane produced an unnamed now 4-year-old full sister to Saturday's hero and an unnamed 3-year-old colt by Officer.
