One week after narrowly upsetting the GI Belmont S. in dramatic fashion with Creator (Tapit), the Steve Asmussen barn will be back in the spotlight with fellow sophomore Gun Runner (Candy Ride {Arg}) in Saturday night's GIII Matt Winn S. at Churchill Downs.
The GII Risen Star S. and GII TwinSpires.com Louisiana Derby hero has been installed as the overwhelming 3-5 morning-line favorite off a solid third-place finish in the GI Kentucky Derby. The soon-to-be-inducted Hall of Fame trainer said that Gun Runner is using the Matt Winn as a springboard to the $1-million GI Betfair.com Haskell Invitational at Monmouth Park July 31.
“I think he's proved his worth with what he's done this year with the Louisiana Derby win and the third in the Kentucky Derby, and I think that this is a very good bridge for him to get to the Haskell,” said Asmussen, who has won the Matt Winn with Compendium (2001), Pyro (2008) and Tapiture (2014), respectively.
