Whitsbury's 'Year Never to Forget' as Chaldean's Sister Makes a Million

By Emma Berry and Brian Sheerin NEWMARKET, UK--It wasn't too hard to imagine that a Kingman (GB) half-sister to this season's leading juvenile Chaldean (GB) (Frankel {GB}) would steal the show at Tattersalls, and with shades of two years ago it was Juddmonte that swooped for the weanling from Whitsbury Manor Stud's increasingly influential broodmare Suelita (GB) (Dutch Art {GB}) at an even million gns. This time though Juddmonte's general manager Simon Mockridge was forced to stake almost double the amount it took to buy Chaldean, and that is largely...

1 Million Kingman Filly Another For Juddmonte At Park Paddocks

Taking the lead at Tattersalls on Friday, was a bay filly by Kingman (GB) (lot 1025), who sold for 1 million gns to Juddmonte Farms. That outfit had already struck for Friday's previous top lot, lot 928, a filly by Lope De Vega (Ire), for 500,000gns earlier in the session. Offered by breeder Whitsbury Manor Stud, the daughter of the winning Suelita (GB) (Dutch Art {GB}) is a half-sister to G1 Dewhurst S. hero Chaldean (GB) (Frankel {GB}) and G2 Mill Reef S. victor-turned-sire Alkumait (GB) (Showcasing {GB}), as well...

Havana Grey Brother to Dragon Symbol Leads Tattersalls Foals

NEWMARKET, UK--"If we don't believe in our stallions, who will?" So said breeder and consignor Ed Harper after topping the second day of foal trade at Tattersalls, though in the case of lot 793, the sire in question, this season's leading freshman Havana Grey (GB), has already garnered the support of plenty of breeders and buyers. But to justify the day's top price tag of 250,000gns at this stage of his young life, the colt had to have plenty more going for him, and his half-brother Dragon Symbol (GB) (Cable...

Who's Hot Ahead Of The Tattersalls December Foal Sale?

The insatiable demand for foals was evident in the figures recorded at Goffs last week with turnover rising 16% to €29,561,000 and the average climbing 16% to €40,110. At the top end of the market, Kingman (GB) dominated with three foals by the Juddmonte-based stallion selling for a combined €1,540,000 and one of Europe's leading pinhookers Philipp Stauffenberg signing for the €550,000 top lot by the sire.  Tally-Ho Stud may be best known for being sellers but they pipped Stauffenberg for the biggest spenders title by signing for 19 foals...

Prokofiev In Right Key For Huge Tatts Debut

Ed Harper will never forget the time he first encountered Sergei Prokofiev in the flesh. The Whitsbury Manor Stud director was at the Rowley Mile for the G3 Cornwallis S., anticipating a big run from Heartwarming (GB) (Showcasing {GB}), a farm-bred filly leased to the Hot To Trot syndicate with Clive Cox. "We fancied her heavily," Harper recalls. "She'd been doing some very smart work, we knew we hadn't quite seen the best of her, today was the day. But then I saw Sergei Prokofiev in the pre-parade ring and...

The 7-year-old son of Havana Gold (Ire) started his stud career at £8,000 and has covered the last  two seasons at a fee of £6,000. "After such a phenomenal year it's taken a lot of thought as we're trying to keep him within reach of the breeders that have supported him thus far," said stud director Ed Harper. "It's already clear that demand will far outweigh supply, and I just...

Cream Rises In Book 3

NEWMARKET, UK -- Even in what proved a record-breaking edition, Book 3 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale last year yielded just a couple of six-figure sales. On Thursday, we had two in the first half hour. Any prospectors who had staggered out of the opening two books gasping for some oasis of affordability already knew what they were up against. To be fair, trade would not remain quite as consistently wild as had been the case across the two preceding catalogues. While unsatisfied demand from Book 2 was transparent...

Frankel's Chaldean Downs Rivals In The Dewhurst

The form of last month's G2 Champagne S. received a timely boost when Silver Knott (GB) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) snagged the G3 Emirates Autumn S. earlier on the card and that former contest's winner, Juddmonte's 550,000gns Tattersalls December foal Chaldean (GB) (Frankel {GB}--Suelita {GB}, by Dutch Art {GB}), continued his impressive winning spree by making virtually all in Saturday's G1 Darley Dewhurst S. at Newmarket, providing trainer Andrew Balding with a first triumph in the seven-furlong Autumn highlight. The May-foaled chestnut had earlier followed up a June 30 debut...

Lightning Strikes Twice For Night Of Thunder At Doncaster

With another 60 yearlings standing out in the field at home in Westmeath, it was important for the team at Tally-Ho to begin the domestic sales season with a bang, and that's exactly what they did in sending out the top lot at the Goffs UK Premier Yearling Sale--the Blandford Bloodstock-bought lot 278, a filly by Night Of Thunder (Ire).  Mark McStay went to £230,000 to secure a colt by the stallion [170] on Tuesday but it was Tally-Ho's first foal out of the five-time winner and listed-placed Thiswaycadeaux (Ire)...

The 7-2 second favourite settled into a comfortable rhythm in second after the early exchanges and inched to the front at halfway. Coming under pressure approaching the quarter-mile marker, he was far from undone when...

First Black Type Winner For Havana Grey

With the kind of start that Whitsbury Manor Stud's Havana Grey (GB) has enjoyed, it was only a matter of time before his first crop featured a black-type winner and it duly came at Naas on Wednesday evening. Supplied by the Amo Racing And Omnihorse Racing-owned and Alice Haynes-trained filly Lady Hollywood (GB) in the five-furlong Listed Arqana Irish EBF Marwell S., the landmark is surely only the beginning in this category for one of the most successful first-season sires of recent times (by Havana Gold {Ire}). Always travelling easily...
