Breeding Digest: Disco Confirms Timing Is Everything When Buying Mares

Sponsored by Pedigrees360. Sorry to do this yet again, but the very fact that the exercise can be repeated every November shows that we're not looking at anything freakish; in other words, that there are valid lessons to learn. Because with daughters of Old Fashioned, Mitole, Big Brown, Ten Sovereigns (Ire) and Outwork among the 10 most valuable mares changing hands at Fasig-Tipton and Keeneland last week, why would anyone trying to seed a breeding program start by spending fortunes on fillies by glamor sires? For most of us, who...

Fully Subscribed Gives Tiz The Law A Graded Double In Mother Goose

Klaravich Stable and Chad Brown might be the only ones in New York having a better afternoon than Coolmore America's young stallion Tiz the Law. 3-year-old filly Fully Subscribed (Tiz the Law) became the fourth winner on the Saturday card at Aqueduct for the owner/trainer combo, capturing the GII Mother Goose Stakes. Her win came just 60 minutes after another 3-year-old, Tiz Dashing (Tiz the Law) took down the GII Hill Prince Stakes in upset fashion on the grass for Sackatoga Stable. A classy debut winner going seven furlongs on...

Tiz the Law's Tiz Dashing King of the 'Hill'

Sackatoga Stable's Tiz Dashing (Tiz the Law) was able to work out a two-wide trip from an awkward draw in Saturday's GIII Hill Prince Stakes at Aqueduct and stayed on nicely to post a cozy success to become the newest stakes and graded stakes winner for his sire, who carried the very same color to victory in races like the GI Champagne Stakes, GI Belmont Stakes and GI Travers Stakes in 2019 and 2020. Drawn widest in a field of nine and entering off a torrid trip when a flattening-out...

Foal Crop Drops Again; Tiz The Law Most Active Sire

In its annual Report of Mares Bred (RMBs) released Thursday, The Jockey Club estimates that the 2026 foal crop will be 17,000. That represents a slight decline of 300 from the 2025 crop. The foal crop projection is computed by using RMBs received to date for the 2025 breeding season. RMBs are to be filed by August 1 of each breeding season. The number of mares bred has fallen every year since 2015, when 34,122 mares were bred. Over that ten-year period, the foal crop has dropped by 28%. During...

Brogden's Machmer Hall Offers Annual Mare Reduction During Fasig-Tipton Digital Sale

Carrie Brogden of highly successful Machmer Hall fame is a self-described horse addict and she is not shy when it comes to admitting it. Still, the straight shooter with the commercial breeding business outside of Paris, Kentucky, has to make some decisions every fall when it comes to reducing the farm's stock. It is just the way it goes as October rolls around. "I am the ultimate horse sale junkie, just ask my husband Craig, who would be thrilled if we had 30 elite mares on a 250-acre farm," said...

Breeding Digest: Baeza Latest In Boat's Wake

Sponsored by Pedigrees360. Candidly, it always feels a little cheap to delve into a pedigree once its functionality is established, scrubbing away any genetic mud before triumphantly producing some hidden nugget to explain how it has all come together. "Post rationalization" of this kind is standard in articles like this, and the absolute opposite of the grueling enterprise that has worn out the soles of so many shoes over the past couple of weeks. As ever, Keeneland presented thousands of perfectly plausible pages to measure against the animals paraded before...

Maxfield's Englishman a Dazzling 'Rising Star' for Freshman Sire

Cherie DeVaux unleashed a classy gentleman on Churchill Downs Friday afternoon, and Englishman (Maxfield) strolled in to clock a blistering time as well as securing 'Rising Star' honors. Away from the blocks quickly, and out to control the tempo, he was tracked closely for most of the race by Tagermeen (Into Mischief), who has now run in three straight races against eventual 'TDN Rising Stars'--namely Curtain Call (Tiz the Law) and Ted Noffey (Into Mischief) in his prior two jumps. The latter won the GI Spendthrift Farm Hopeful Stakes while...

DANDONA (f, 2, Tiz the Law--Tulsa Queen {SW & GSP-Can, SW-USA, $211,381}, by Cactus Ridge) was a pricey in-training purchase this past spring and she started her career on the tapeta after this maiden was rained off the turf course. Given 2-5 favoritism on the back of two bullets from her last three works, the filly was content to watch the race unfold from the back of the pack as pacesetters rolled through :23.59 and...
