George Main Renamed in Honor of King Charles III, The Everest Gets Purse Boost

Racing NSW and the Australian Turf Club (ATC) announced on Sunday that the G1 George Main S. will be replaced by the G1 King Charles III S. at Royal Randwick starting this year. The King Charles III S. is named in honour of His Majesty The King and will be run over 1600 metres under weight-for-age conditions and carry a prize purse of A$5 million, making it the world's richest weight-for-age mile event. Golden Eagle Increased to A$10M

Racing NSW announced that courtesy of an increase in sponsorship, the prizemoney for the Golden Eagle will be increased to A$10 million from A$8 million. Contested at Rosehill Gardens, the 1500-meter race is scheduled for Oct. 29. Unique to the contest, 10% of the prizemoney-equaling A$1-million--will be donated to charity. The owners of each horse in the race will nominate a charity to receive 10% of their horse's prizemoney. Racing NSW Freezes Phoenix Prizemoney

Action has been taken in Australia against Phoenix Thoroughbreds for the first time since the organization's founder Amer Abdulaziz was accused of money laundering in the U.S. in November of 2019, with Racing New South Wales Chief Steward Marc Van Gestel telling ANZ Bloodstock News that it will freeze all prizemoney won by Phoenix horses until the "matter has been resolved in the U.S., or until such time that it's been resolved to our satisfaction." Trainer Bede Murray dies at 80

Classic-winning New South Wales trainer Bede Murray has died from cancer at the age of 80. A former dairy farmer who trained from Kembla Grange, Murray celebrated his final victory on Jan. 18 when O'Reilly's Revenge (NZ) (O'Reilly {NZ}) won the Moruya Cup.
