Five G Scratched From Kentucky Oaks

GII Gulfstream Park Oaks winner Five G (Vekoma) will not contest Friday's GI Kentucky Oaks at Churchill Downs, according to Daily Racing Form. Trainer George Weaver told DRF's Dave Grening, "This is the type of race where you've got to be 110% and we don't feel like she is." A four-length winner in her second career start while facing New York breds at the Big A last fall, the Gatsas Stables-owned filly won this season's Cash Run Stakes in addition to finishing second behind fellow Oaks contender Quietside (Malibu Moon)...

The Kentucky Oaks Top 10: Quietside, Five G On the Upswing

The last week of preps for the GI Kentucky Oaks is upon us. The GI Ashland Stakes will be run Friday at Keeneland on opening day and Aqueduct will offer the GIII Gazelle Stakes the next day. The Gazelle came up predictably weak, but the Ashland has some intriguing contenders that could crack the top three or four come Friday. Last week, Quietside (Malibu Moon) was a convincing winner of the GII Fantasy Stakes at Oaklawn and Five G (Vekoma) never looked back to win the GII Fasig-Tipton Gulfstream Park...

Brad Cox 'Happy' with Tappan Street, Five G Headed to Kentucky

GI Florida Derby hero Tappan Street (Into Mischief) has emerged from his Saturday exploits in good order, but his trainer revealed that a travel itinerary has not yet been decided for the trip north to the Twin Spires. The son of Into Mischief got the best of GII Fountain of Youth victor Sovereignty (Into Mischief) to claim his 100 points to the first Saturday in May, and the aforementioned runner-up also secured a berth into the race with 50. Tappan Street currently sits in third with 110 and is tied...

Vekoma's Five G Goes Wire-to-Wire in Gulfstream Park Oaks

Gatsas Stable's homebred Five G (Vekoma) secured a berth in the GI Kentucky Oaks with a wire-to-wire victory in the GII Fasig-Tipton Gulfstream Park Oaks in Hallandale Beach Saturday. The 6-5 favorite was pressed by second choice The Queens MG (Thousand Words) through a quarter in :23.63 and had inched clear through a half in :47.11. As The Queens MG fell back, Anna's Promise (Promises Fulfilled) took up the challenge on the far turn, but Five G shrugged off that rival at the top of the lane and pulled away...

The Kentucky Oaks Top 10 for Mar. 27

Here's a look at the sixth installment of our Kentucky Oaks Top 10 for 2025: Things are really starting to heat up. Last weekend saw Good Cheer (Medaglia d'Oro), who is now 6 for 6, winning the Fasig-Tipton Fair Grounds Oaks. For now, she looks like a strong favorite in the GI Kentucky Oaks. At Turfway Park, Bless the Broken (Laoban) won the Bourbonette Oaks, but didn't show enough versus a weak field to crack our top 10. This will be a huge weekend of preps that will include the...

The TDN Kentucky Oaks Top 10 for Feb. 27

The GIII Honeybee S., rescheduled for one day due to cold weather at Oaklawn, figured to be the key GI Kentucky Oaks prep run so far this year. And it was. Our No. 1 in previous polls Muhimma (Munnings) ran well to finish third, but it was not enough for her to keep her top spot. Take Charge Milady (Take Charge Indy) was 10th and Look Forward (Bolt d'Oro) was seventh. Off those performances both have dropped out of the Top 10. This will be a big weekend for Oaks-bound...

A Bridesmaid No More: Quietside Steps Up to Upset Honeybee

Shortleaf Stable's Quietside (Malibu Moon) had been knocking on the door of stakes success since she was tabbed a 'TDN Rising Star' following her debut win at Saratoga last August, but finally the filly just broke the door down with an emphatic victory in the GIII Honeybee Stakes at Oaklawn Park Sunday. Five G (Vekoma) rocketed from her far outside post at the start of the 1 1/16-mile race and cleared the field, with Quietside, who broke just to her inside, shadowing her move into first turn. Favored Muhimma (Munnings),...

Vekoma Filly Five G Easily Best In Fasig-Tipton Cash Run S.

Runner-up in the grassy Tepin Stakes when last seen at Aqueduct Nov. 17, Gatsas Stables' Five G ran away from her overmatched rivals to easily take out Wednesday's Fasig-Tipton Cash Run Stakes at Gulfstream Park. Let go at better than 5-1 returning to the main track for the first time since finishing unplaced behind the talented MSW 'TDN Rising Star' With the Angels (Omaha Beach) at Saratoga last summer, the homebred filly bounced away well enough from the inside gate beneath John Velazquez and railed through to contest the early...

Sunday Best: Laurelin Gives Motion Another Stakes Win At Aqueduct This Weekend

After taking home the Central Park Stakes trophy with Jack and Jim (Slumber {GB}) at the Big A on Saturday, trainer Graham Motion made it back to the winner's circle when Laurelin (Ire) (Zarak {Fr}) got up in time to take the Tepin Stakes on Sunday. The chestnut broke her maiden for the Maryland-based conditioner by 1 1/2 lengths over the same grass course Oct. 13, but that was not enough to install her as the favorite in the bettor's minds. As a 4-1 shot here, the filly settled mid-pack...
