Charlie Appleby has got off to a flyer with his two-year-olds and Wednesday's Royal Ascot Two-Year-Old Trial EBF Conditions Stakes saw one who could be for the future as well as now. A half-brother to the G1 Commonwealth Cup and G2 Norfolk Stakes winner Perfect Power (Ire) (Ardad {Ire}) who cost 1million gns at Tattersalls October Book 1, Godolphin's Wise Approach (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}) had a lot to live up to on this debut but as the 16-5 joint-favourite was expected to put up a bold show.
Tracking the leaders throughout the early stages with William Buick able to draft easily, he was delivered to master the previous winner Super Soldier (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) close home and score by half a length. “That was perfect-he's a lovely horse with a good attitude who you would expect to improve from today and that rode like a good two-year-old race,” Buick said.
Wise Approach is the fourth foal out of Sagely (Ire) (Frozen Power {Ire}), whose first was the aforementioned Perfect Power who also captured the G1 Middle Park Stakes and G1 Prix Morny alongside his Royal Ascot triumphs. Also responsible for Golden Mind (Ire) (Galileo Gold {GB}), who was third in the Listed Chesham Stakes at the Royal meeting, she is kin to the listed-placed Sagaciously (Ire) whose son Epic Poet (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) was a listed scorer who placed four times at Group level including when runner-up in the G2 Red Sea Turf Handicap.
Sagely is also a granddaughter of Saga D'Ouilly (Fr) (Linamix {Fr}), the full-sister to the Arc hero Sagamix (Fr) and half to the G1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud-winning sire Sagacity (Fr) (Highest Honor {Fr}) and to the formidable broodmare Shastye (Ire) (Danehill). Under the latter are the high-class Galileo (Ire) trio of Japan (GB), Mogul (GB) and Secret Gesture (GB). Sagely's yearling is a full-sister to the winner.
