May 22, 2025 - Yarmouth, Race 4, GBP £40,000, 6f 3yT, 2yo
Dam: Kamakura , by Medaglia d'Oro
Owner: Wathnan Racing
Breeder: Oglethorpe Breeders
Trainer: Hamad Al Jehani
There were a few likely types in Yarmouth's six-furlong novice on Thursday and one clear-cut winner in Too Darn Hot's newcomer Postmodern who surged to TDN Rising Star status. Contained initially by Jamie Spencer, Wathnan's 270,000gns Tattersalls October Book 1 purchase tanked his way to the front before getting past the first two furlongs.
Asked to extend with every rival covered a furlong from home, the Hamad Al Jehani-trained 18-5 second favourite powered clear for an emphatic five-length success. Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum's 500,000gns Tattersalls October Book 1 buy Amorim by Havana Grey was the closest at the line, but treading water behind the half-brother to Muhaarar's GII Pegasus World Cup Filly and Mare Turf Invitational Stakes winner Be Your Best.
“He left the gates smarter than I wanted to, but he pricked his ears in front and I was still taking him back going to the furlong pole,” Spencer said. “I thought there I'd teach him a bit and see what we've got.” The trainer added, “He's a nice horse and we were educating him today, but he jumped fast and showed a nice turn of foot. Hopefully we'll see him in a big race next–it's too early to name a race at Royal Ascot, but that's the main target now.”
Postmodern, who is the second TDN Rising Star for his sire, is out of the unraced Medaglia d'Oro mare Kamakura whose aforementioned daughter Be Your Best was also successful in the GIII Long Island Stakes and the GIII Suwannee River Stakes and was second in the GI Del Mar Oaks and GI American Oaks. Sold by Godolphin for 150,000gns at 2016 Tattersalls July, she is a half to the Alydar Stakes winner and GIII Discovery Handicap runner-up Bay Of Plenty also by Medaglia D'Oro and Distorted Humor's Fortify who was placed in the GI Champagne Stakes and GII Hopeful Stakes.
The third dam is Nureyev's accomplished Flagbird, whose daughter Dubai Belle produced A.P. Indy's GI Ashland Stakes winner Little Belle and whose Machiavellian mare Scarlet Ibis was responsible forNew Approach's G3 Albany Stakes winner Newfangled. Also connected to More Than Ready's GI Highlander Stakes runner-up Lady Alexandra, Kamakura's yearling filly is by Baaeed while she was bred to Cody's Wish for 2025.
