Shaman Ghost Targets Classic

Shaman Ghost | Sarah Andrew

Stronach Stables' Shaman Ghost (Ghostzapper) tuned up for the Nov. 5 GI Breeders' Cup Classic with a seven-furlong breeze at Belmont Park Thursday for trainer Jimmy Jerkens. The GI Woodward S. winner covered the distance in 1:28.66 under exercise rider Kelvin Pahal.

“He went good,” Jerkens said. “It was just what we wanted. He'll work again in California and he'll work pretty sharply once he gets out there.”

Shaman Ghost is expected to ship to California Wednesday along with stablemate and fellow Classic contender Effinex (Mineshaft). Most recently second behind Hoppertunity (Any Given Saturday) in the Oct. 8 GI Jockey Club Gold Cup, Effinex is expected to breeze again at Belmont before shipping to Santa Anita.

“I'm undecided about that guy, when he's working,” Jerkens said of Effinex. “He doesn't need a whole lot, he just ran. Since they're scheduled to leave on Wednesday, we'll probably do something on Sunday or Monday.”
