There may be another like Mick in our industry, but I'm not aware of it. He's nothing if not unconventional. He's the only person I know who buys at the top level of our sales as an owner, then does the day-to-day training as well.
While most others are sending their yearlings to the warmth of the South to be broken, Mick sends his to Montana. While most of the rest of us are wearing coats and ties to the big race days, Mick puts on one of his collared shirts (despite the encouragement from his wife Wendy to do otherwise).
Mick is a refreshing reminder that there is more than one way to do it, and do it right. He is humble and kind, but also possesses an infectious confidence that is not off-putting.
In an industry full of “characters,” Mick is right at the top, in the best sense of the word.
