Wootton Bassett Filly Fille d'Oro A Professional Debut Winner at the Spa

6th-Saratoga, $100,000, Msw, 8-22, 2yo, f, 1 1/16mT, 1:42.48, fm, 1 1/2 lengths.
FILLE D'ORO (IRE) (f, 2, Wootton Bassett {GB}–D'oro Diva, by Medaglia d'Oro), off at odds just shy of 6-1, was steered away from the pocket entering the final furlong of Friday's sixth race at Saratoga and finished nicely to graduate in her first trip to the races for trainer Brad Cox.

A €330,000 purchase by agent Clay Scherer out of last year's Arqana August Yearling Sale in Deauville, the bay filly was trapped out three deep nearing the wire for the first time, but was wisely slotted in by Manny Franco to save ground from fifth as the leaders went at an even gallop up front. Traveling three back the fence and in the slipstream of favored Counterintuitive (Not This Time) into the final three furlongs, Fille d'Oro slipped through when the favorite vacated the inside in upper stretch, pushed away from the fence at the furlong grounds and swapped over to her wrong lead late, but ran down Repole Stable's Goffs November purchase Celebrity Warrior (Ire) (Saxon Warrior {Jpn}) to score cozily.

Wootton Bassett, who was represented by a €2.3-million colt and a €1.2-million filly at the just-concluded Arqana August Sale, has been on a tear in Europe and, indeed all over the world, and is responsible for the likes of Whirl (Ire), recent winner of the G1 Pretty Polly Stakes in Ireland and the G1 Nassau Stakes at Goodwood in England. The sire of 69 black-type winners worldwide, including 47 at the group/graded level, Wootton Bassett has accounted for 15 top-level scorers, among them GI Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf heroine Audarya (Fr) and Royal Patronage (Fr), winner of the G1 Canterbury Stakes at Randwick (Sydney), Australia this past March.

The winner's dam is a winning half-sister to dual Irish group winner Brooch (Empire Maker), best known on these shores as the dam of GI Kentucky Derby-winning 'TDN Rising Star' Mandaloun (Into Mischief). This is also the female family of G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe heroine Bluestocking (GB) (Camelot {GB}) and Qirat (GB) (Showcasing {GB}), the 150-1 shock winner of the G1 Sussex Stakes at Goodwood last month. D'oro Diva also has a yearling filly by Lope de Vega (Ire) and a filly foal by Pinatubo (Ire). Sales history: €330,000 Ylg '24 ARAUG. Lifetime Record: 1-1-0-0, $55,000.
