Wathnan's Big Weekend Capped By Light Of Dawn's Prestige

Stepping up to seven furlongs on Sunday, Wathnan's Light Of Dawn (Showcasing) showed that stamina is her strong suit in Goodwood's G3 Prestige Stakes.

Third in the Albany and Prix de Cabourg over six, the Karl Burke-trained €625,000 Arqana May Breeze-Up sensation was committed by James Doyle inside the final quarter mile and stayed on powerfully in the soft ground to score by 1 1/4 lengths from the Eve Johnson Houghton-trained Eabha (Space Blues). A further half length behind in third was the Gosdens' blueblood Coaxed to provide her first-season sire Baaeed with his first black-type.

“She's done very little in her short career, we took her over to Deauville and the ground was very quick and we were keen to get her on a slower surface,” Doyle said. “She was in good company in the Albany and hopefully she can mix it with those again. She's a big girl so I'm sure she'll train on, she should be better as a three-year-old.”

Reflecting on the operation's run of success over the course of Saturday and Sunday's action, the number one rider added, “It's been a big weekend for Wathnan, with Diego Ventura in France, Holguin winning in Germany and Leading Change in the Travers at Saratoga last night.”

Pedigree Notes
Light Of Dawn's dam An Ghalanta (Holy Roman Emperor), who took the Curragh Stakes and was third in the Round Tower, has three other Stakes performers in the St Hugh's Stakes winner Miaharris (Zoustar), the Empress Stakes scorer Time Scale (Charm Spirit) and the Albany runner-up Bletchley (Makfi).

A half to the Killavullan Stakes-placed Billyford (Lil's Boy), she hails from Jim Bolger's family of the Irish 2,000 Guineas hero Mac Swiney (New Approach), the Dewhurst hero Parish Hall (Teofilo) and the Irish Derby third Light Heavy also by Teofilo. Her yearling filly by Dark Angel sells at the upcoming Tattersalls October Book 1, while she also has a filly foal by Sioux Nation.
