Hit the Bid Racing Stable's Fast Market (Volatile) came flying late to win the GIII Pebbles Stakes at Aqueduct Sunday. The bay filly took nine tries to break her maiden over the Aqueduct lawn in September, but came right back to just miss in graded company when runner-up in the Oct. 18 GII Sands Points Stakes and was favored at 3-2 to make the grade Sunday.
“She's just a very nice filly,” said winning trainer John Terranova. “She finally put it all together in her last few starts and it's more of the same. She's just getting better and better. She's a later foal, so she took a little while for us to figure out, but we finally got it all right and she's been real consistent and we can't wait for next season.”
Fast Market settled near the back of a tightly bunched pack as Love You Anyway (Tapit) took the field through moderate fractions in the Pebbles. She bullied her way between rivals while four wide at the top of the lane and was forced to pause briefly as the pacesetter drifted out at midstretch, but once she saw daylight, the favorite closed powerfully to win going away by 1 1/2 lengths.
“I was traveling good and she gave me a good turn-of-foot,” said winning rider Flavien Prat. “I thought when I got clear that she was going to get there, and then the horse in front kind of shifted out and she looked at her a little bit, but then she regrouped and went on. She's very handy and does everything right.”
Fast Market did a little of everything before breaking her maiden over a mile on the turf Sept. 21. She was on the board in main-track sprints at Gulfstream and Tampa over the winter and took on graded company while still a maiden, setting the pace before tiring to sixth in the one-mile GII Appalachian Stakes over the turf at Keeneland in April. She was runner-up while sprinting 5 1/2 furlongs over the Saratoga lawn in July. And shed blinkers to earn that elusive first win just two starts ago.
“She's so switched off and kind and classy,” Terranova said. “She is so nice to be around. She's let us get away with quite a bit–we've sprinted her, done dirt and turf. She did have a few decent races on the dirt and she's a big, strong filly, but she just took a little while for us to figure it all out.”
Terranova added, “Now she'll more than likely have the winter off and come back in the spring.”
Pedigree Notes:
Fast Market is the third graded winner for her sophomore sire Volatile (Violence), who has also been represented by Tip Top Thomas and Speed King.
Betty Draper, in foal to Complexity, sold for $20,000 at the 2024 Keeneland November sale and was exported to Libya.
