Last seen finishing 10th in the G1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud in October, Warring States who is a half-brother to the G2 Centaur S., G3 Summer Dash and G3 Keihan Hai winner and G1 Takamatsunomiya Kinen and G1 Sprinters S. runner-up Hakusan Moon produced an early shot across the bows ahead of the G1 Deutsches Derby. Becoming the third individual group winner to emerge from that Saint-Cloud feature in 2017 after Cunco (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) and Rekindling (GB) (High Chaparral {Ire}), the chestnut who had scored on his only other start at Hoppegarten in early October showed battling qualities which will help in the July 2 Hamburg Classic. Held up worse than midfield by Harry Bentley initially, he was sent up to gain a slight edge approaching the furlong pole where Enjoy Vijay gave persistent chase and was tenacious as he saw off that threat. In doing so, he was providing trainer Andreas Wohler with an overall sixth and third consecutive renewal of this contest.
