Have a spring meeting Ben Colebrook!
Trendsetter (g, 3, Modernist–Suyapa, by Astrology) came rolling down the center of the stretch to win going away at 32-1 in Saturday's GIII Stonestreet Lexington S. at Keeneland.
The Hell We Did (Authentic) was second. Pacesetter Corona de Oro (Bolt d'Oro) was third.
The victory adds to a huge beginning of the Keeneland meeting for Colebrook, who also saddled Percy's Bar (Upstart) to a win in last Friday's GI Central Bank Ashland S.
“I wouldn't say I was surprised,” Colebrook said. “I thought he was going to run good. I definitely didn't think that kind of performance was there, but I thought we were going to see some improvement, and if he improved, then he was going to be kind of right there with these horses and get a piece of it.”
Trendsetter, a last-out third in the Rushaway S. over the synthetic at Turfway Mar. 21, sat an inside trip in fifth through a half mile in :47.92. Under a ride by Kazushi Kimura on the far turn, he rolled up three deep at the top of the stretch and powered home to win by 2 1/4 lengths.
The Stonestreet Lexington offers 20-10-6-4-2 points on the Road to the Kentucky Derby.
Trendsetter began his career with a pair of victories at Colonial last summer, including the restricted Hickory Tree S. His three previous tries this term also included a fourth-place finish in the seven-furlong Spectacular Bid S. at Laurel Feb. 4.
“After the race at Turfway, we were looking around and there just wasn't anywhere to really run him,” Colebrook said. “I know his numbers weren't stacking up against these horses, but I had a little feeling he could maybe get a piece of it, with the way he's been training since the last race. I think it's a big deal training at Keeneland year-round and to have a horse that knows this course and has been here. He kind of is a grinder, so I figured back to long on the dirt was kind of what he wanted to do. He's just never had a chance to do it.”
Pedigree Notes:
Trendsetter, a $22,000 KEEJAN yearling, $25,000 EASOCT yearling and $130,000 OBSAPR 2-year-old, becomes the first graded winner for Modernist. His only other stakes winner is Talk to Me Jimmy, who romped in the Withers S. at Aqueduct in February. Trendsetter is the second graded winner for broodmare sire Astrology. Trendsetter's dam Suyapa–a maiden of six career starts–is also represented by a 2-year-old filly by Idol. Suyapa brought just $1,000 from William Nicks at the 2024 Fasig-Tipton December Digital Sale.
