Tokyo Gold Skips to Italian Derby Win

Kendargent | Haras de Colleville

Tokyo Gold (Fr) (Kendargent {Fr}) rolled to a daylight win in the G2 Premio 138th Derby Italiano Universita' Campus Bio-Medico di Roma at Capannelle on Sunday. The 5-2 crowd's pick gave the Demuro brothers an international Classic double, with Cristian Demuro in the irons in Rome. His brother Mirco had claimed the G1 Yushun Himba aboard Uberleben (Jpn) (Gold Ship {Jpn}) at Tokyo earlier in the day.

Caught out in the middle of the course from the bell, he rated in midpack through the early stages. Still one of the widest approaching the final turn, he cruised up the centre of the course at the 600-metre marker, seized command shortly thereafter and cantered across the line four lengths to the good of Juan de Montalban (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}). Alastor (Ire) (Helmet {Aus}) was another 1 1/2 lengths behind.

A winner at second asking at Saint-Malo last July, Tokyo Gold captured the Listed Prix Haras de Bouquetot in his next start at Craon on Sept. 5. Off the board in the G3 Prix Thomas Bryon a month later, the colt was a distant second in the Listed Prix Maurice Caillault when making his seasonal bow at Chantilly on Mar. 9. He stalked and briefly led in the G3 Prix Noailles, but faded to fourth at ParisLongchamp on Apr. 11.

Pedigree Notes
Tokyo Gold is the 14th group winner from 33 black-type winners for his sire, who stands at Haras de Colleville in France. Like his sire, and damsire, Dalakhani, all three are grey. The latter has 35 black-type winners as a broodmare sire, with the Teruya Yoshida homebred his 18th group winner.

A full-brother to the G1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud third Notte Bianca (Fr) (Kendargent {Fr}), Tokyo Gold is out of Italian listed winner Biancarosa. Bred by Azienda Agricola La Vigna SRL, she was raced by Yoshida to win the Listed Premio Republiche Marinare at Capannelle as a 2-year-old. Mated exclusively with Kendargent once retired to the paddocks, the bay's latest produce is a yearling filly by that sire.
