A homebred for the Ontario-based Sam-Son Farm, Deceptive Vision represents decades of meticulous breeding by the late Ernie Samuel, and later his daughter, the late Tammy Samuel-Balaz. Sam-Son is the breeder of not only Deceptive Vision’s first three dams, but also of her damsire, Smart Strike, and his first three dams. In addition to Deceptive Vision’s full brothers Eye of the Leopard, winner of the 2009 Queen’s Plate en route to champion 3-year-old honors in Canada, and multiple stakes winner and multiple graded stakes-placed Hotep, the family is also responsible for Grade I winner and Canadian Horse of the Year Quiet Resolve (Affirmed). Deceptive Vision, with her second straight win at Fair Grounds yesterday, proved the family is still very much alive. The long-striding bay debuted with a second-place finish over the Woodbine Polytrack Dec. 1, and looked much more at home when switching to the dirt and stretching out to this trip here Jan. 4. She recorded a flashy 3 1/4-length victory after traveling wide throughout, and indicated in her worktab since that she was preparing for a repeat performance. Off well from the nine post here, the 6-5 favorite was hung wide into the first turn, and remained in the middle of the track down the backstretch. She improved her position around the turn to sit just off the rail-skimming Irish Lute (Midnight Lute) at the quarter pole and, after appearing beaten by that rival in midstretch, found another gear and sailed to the lead to win by a half-length. Lifetime Record: 3-2-1-0, $61,496.
