Hazit (War Front) was let go for 3-1 in this typically productive Travers Day maiden as all the tote attention was focused on $1-million KEESEP yearling Good Magic (Curlin), but stiff-armed that runner late to garner the‘TDN Rising Star’ distinction. Right to the front while facing minimal resistance, the $420,000 OBSMAR (:10 1/5) pick-up posted an opening quarter of :23.18 before Good Magic ratcheted up the pressure past a :46.91 half-mile. The chalk continued in pursuit of Hazit all the way to the wire, but Hazit was always ridden with confidence and hit the line a length to the good in 1:16.40. Hazit is a son of Rumor (Indian Charlie), who herself was a ‘Rising Star‘ and annexed the GIII Las Flores S. in 2013. Rumor is a half-sister to Grade I-winning juvenile Dixie Chatter (Dixie Union). Third dam Phone Chatter (Phone Trick) was 1993’s champion juvenile filly, and produced Grade II winner Cat Chat (Storm Cat), who in turn was responsible for these connections’ GI Juddmonte Spinster S. heroine In Lingerie (Empire Maker). Rumor has a yearling colt by Ghostzapper and was bred to Flatter earlier this year. Travers day baby races have served as jumping off points for many a subsequent graded stakes performer over the years–including 2-year-old champ Uncle Mo (by Rumor’s sire Indian Charlie) in 2011 and his son and subsequent GII Remsen S. hero Mo Town last year.
