Tattersalls Irish 2000 Guineas: Where Did They Come From?

Can Paddington give Aidan O'Brien another edition of the Irish 2000 Guineas? | Racingfotos.com

by Heather Anderson & Brian Sheerin

A strong field of 11 has been drawn to the Curragh to dispute Classic honours, with a typically robust challenge from Aidan O'Brien led by Paddington (GB) (Siyouni {Fr}). Several horses who contested the English equivalent are also testing their mettle in Ireland, as third-place finisher Royal Scotsman (Ire) (Gleneagles {Ire}) was a £45,000 supplementary entry, joining Guineas runner-up Hi Royal (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}).

AGE OF KINGS (IRE), Kingman (GB)–Turret Rocks (Ire) (Fastnet Rock {Aus})
Owner: Westerberg, Magnier, Tabor, Smith, Brant
Breeder: Farmleigh Bloodstock Ltd
Trainer: Aidan O'Brien
Sales History: 1.1 million gns Tattersalls Book 1 yearling
Pedigree Notes/Form Analysis: The Group 3-placed colt is the first foal out of his multiple group-winning dam who was placed in both the G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches and G1 Pretty Polly S. From the same family as G1 Tattersalls Irish 1000 Guineas starter Comhra (Ire) (Vocalised) and Goldikova (Ire) (Anabaa), Age Of Kings needs to display hidden reserves of talent on Saturday.

ALEXANDER JOHN (IRE), Dick Whittington (Ire)–Central Force (GB) (Pivotal {GB})
Owner/Breeder/Trainer: Luke Comer
Pedigree Notes/Form Analysis: Winless in seven attempts and the 10th foal out of Central Force, he is distant kin to dual French Classic winner and sire Lope De Vega (Ire). A victory on this stage would be a surprise.

BOLD DISCOVERY, Bolt d'Oro–Caribbean Babe (Arch)
Owner: Marc Chan
Breeder: CHC Inc
Trainer: Jessica Harrington
Sales History: A $50,000 Keeneland September yearling, then a private sale
Pedigree Notes/Form Analysis: Twice Group 3 placed, Bold Discovery is the first foal out of his dam, herself a half-sister to a pair of graded winners who were on the American Triple Crown trail at different points in Black Onyx (Rock Hard Ten) and Independence Hall (Constitution). Classic accolades are possible.

CAIRO (IRE), Quality Road–Cuff (Ire) (Galileo {Ire})
Owner: D Smith, Mrs J Magnier, M Tabor, Westerberg
Breeder: Coolmore
Trainer: Aidan O'Brien
Pedigree Notes/Form Analysis: The G3 Killavullan S. winner is out of a stakes-winning full-sister to G1 Irish 2000 Guineas third Gustav Klimt (Ire) and has already won over course and distance. The sire already has one Classic winner to his credit this season in Preakness winner National Treasure, and Cairo has a decent chance.

CHARYN (IRE), Dark Angel (Ire)–Futoon (Ire) (Kodiac {GB})
Owner: Nurlan Bizakov
Breeder: Grangemore Stud
Trainer: Roger Varian
Sales History: 250,000gns Tattersalls October Book 2 yearling
Pedigree Notes/Form Analysis: This Group 2 winner, the second foal out of his multiple stakes-placed dam and a half-brother to G2 Mill Reef S. winner Wings Of War (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}), is from the extended family of G1 Golden Jubilee S. second Galeota (Ire) (Mujadil). Unplaced in the Guineas, he would need to elevate his game at the Curragh.

GALERON (IRE), Camacho (GB)–Society Gal (Ire) (Galileo {Ire})
Owner: Teme Valley & Aura Racing
Breeder: Gigginstown House Stud
Trainer: Charles Hills
Sales History: €45,000 yearling from Goffs Orby Sale
Pedigree Notes/Form Analysis: A half-brother to the stakes-placed Red Icon (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}), his dam was a granddaughter of G1 Prix Saint-Alary winner Grise Mine (Fr) (Crystal Palace {Fr}). The Goffs Million winner was fourth in the English version and could land a piece of the spoils.

HI ROYAL (IRE), Kodiac (GB)–Majestic Roi (Street Cry {Ire})
Owner: Jaber Abdullah
Breeder: Rabbah Bloodstock Ltd
Trainer: Kevin Ryan
Pedigree Notes/Form Analysis: The 10th foal of G1 Sun Chariot S. victress Majestic Roi, he is a half-brother to the decorated Qatari runner Noor Al Hawa (Fr) (Makfi {GB}) and German listed winner Majestic Jasmine (Ire) (New Approach {Ire}). Runner-up in the Newmarket equivalent, this colt, if he runs back to his previous Classic effort, has a decent chance at Classic laurels.

PADDINGTON (GB), Siyouni (Fr)–Modern Eagle (Ger) (Montjeu {Ire})
Owner: Tabor, Smith, Magnier, Westerberg, Brant
Breeder: Dayton Investments Ltd
Trainer: Aidan O'Brien
Sales History: €420,000 Arqana October yearling
Pedigree Notes/Form Analysis: On a three-race winning streak including the Listed Tetrarch S. on May Day, this colt's ancestress Madelia (Fr) (Caro {Ire}) won the G1 French 1000 Guineas in 1977. The fourth foal of his stakes-winning dam, he is one of the livelier contenders.

PROUD AND REGAL (IRE), Galileo (Ire)–Simply Perfect (GB) (Danehill)
Owner: D Smith, Mrs J Magnier, M Tabor, Westerberg
Breeder: Coolmore
Trainer: Donnacha O'Brien
Pedigree Notes/Form Analysis: Already a Group 1 winner, he is the 10th foal out of a juvenile Group 1 winner who was third in the G1 1000 Guineas, and warmed up for this with a third in the G3 Derby Trial S. Every chance.

QUAR SHAMAR (GER), Shamardal–Quariana (Ger) (Lomitas {GB})
Owner: Zhang Yuesheng
Breeder: Stiftung Gestut Fahrhof
Trainer: Jessica Harrington
Sales History: 115,000gns yearling out of Tattersalls Book 1.
Pedigree Notes/Form Analysis: The fourth foal of his dam, who is a daughter of a G2 German 1000 Guineas winner, makes his black-type bow on Saturday. This colt faces a steep hill to climb.

ROYAL SCOTSMAN (IRE), Gleneagles (Ire)–Enrol (GB) (Pivotal {GB})
Owner: Mrs Fitri Hay
Breeder: Rabbah Bloodstock, Ltd.
Trainer: Paul & Oliver Cole
Sales History: 125,000gns Tattersalls October Book 2 yearling
Pedigree Notes/Form Analysis: The winner of the G2 Richmond S. finished runner-up in the G1 Dewhurst S. and third in the G1 QIPCO 2000 Guineas and is the sixth foal out of his multiple stakes-placed dam. A live chance here for this relative of Group 1 winner Bakharoff (The Minstrel).
