He got first jump on the closers, and it proved to be the winning move for Culpable (Street Sense) as he managed to hold off the oncoming Suspend (Tapit) to break his maiden at the Spa.
Away well from the gate, the 9-1 shot was in no rush to get to the front of a pace controlled by Real Restraint (Authentic) through an opening quarter in :24.64. Tucked along the fence in third with 3-1 favorite Greenwell (Flightline) to his outside in fourth, positions remained largely unchanged after a half-mile in :49.54 and six panels in 1:14.59.
Making his move midway on the final bend, he collared the longtime leader by mid-stretch and had built up enough of an advantage to gamely hold off the oncoming rush of Suspend and Related Party (Not This Time), who found his best foot late to make it a blanket finish. The final time was 1:44.75.
“[Culpable] put himself into a good spot, and was able to save ground,” said Todd Pletcher. “They backed it up in the middle part of the race, but he was still in a good position, and he fought on gamely.”
The victor, a $450,000 purchase at the 2025 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Select Yearling sale, is out of a Korean-bred full-sister to GI Kentucky Oaks heroine Serengeti Empress (Alternation). He's a half-brother to 2025 GII Pilgrim Stakes-third Let's Be Frank (Liam's Map), who missed his reserve at the 2024 Keeneland September sale when bidding stalled at $75,000. The dam hasn't had much breeding luck since producing Culpable as her covers to Twirling Candy and Good Magic both missed in 2025 and 2026, respectively. She visited Nyquist for 2027.
The aforementioned Serengeti Empress was a two-time Grade I winner in her career and the runner-up in the GI Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint as well as the GI Acorn, GI Test, and GI Derby City Distaff Stakes. She ran third in the GI Breeders' Cup Distaff.
Serengeti Empress is herself a $70,000 Keeneland September buy by Joel Politi in 2017. As a dam, her son Invictus (Into Mischief) is thus far her most accomplished offspring. He was a $1.2-million Keeneland September yearling purchase by CHC/Maverick Racing/Siena Farm.
