Nonna Bella | Lauren King

9th-GP, $38,000, Msw, 2-4, 3yo, f, 6 1/2f, 1:16.73, ft.

+NONNA BELLA (f, 3, Stay Thirsty–Nonna Mia {GISP, $127,150}, by Empire Maker), a half-sister to GI TwinSpires.com Wood Memorial S. winner Outwork (Uncle Mo), GISW, $701,800, was hammered down to even-money favoritism for this unveiling and lived up to the hype with a wire-to-wire victory. Seizing the early advantage, the homebred maintained a clear advantage as she ticked off opening splits of :22.60 and :45.80. The dark bay appeared gone in early stretch, but Salty (Quality Road) was just hitting her best stride and came surging late to close the gap, but Nonna Bella held on to win by neck. The winner is a half to Nonna's Boy (Distorted Humor), MSP, $241,291. Nonna Bella is the youngest offspring of Nonna Mia, who finished third for these same connections in the 2009 GI Frizette S. Nonna Mia, a half-sister to MGSW Cairo Prince (Pioneerof the Nile), was most recently bred back to Mike Repole's champion and top young sire Uncle Mo. Lifetime Record: 1-1-0-0, $22,800.
