Speightstown's Wusool Impresses In Moussac Success

Since their acquisition of the now-deceased Torrestrella (Ire) (Orpen), the 2004 G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches heroine had promised to provide Shadwell with a genuine gemstone and the time could be now as her final offering Wusool (Speightstown) dominated Sunday's G3 Prix Paul de Moussac Longines at Chantilly. Beaten only once in his career so far by the exciting Fabre trainee Mer et Nuages (Fr) (Lope de Vega {Ire}), the 3-1 second favourite travelled easily behind the aggressively-ridden Glendevon (Scat Daddy) and after taking over 300 metres from the line readily asserted for a comfortable 3 1/2-length success over the G3 Prix Djebel runner-up Magic Bibou (Fr) (Panis), with the 11-10 favourite Wind Chimes (GB) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}) only making laboured progress into third, a half length away.

Following two wins on the Polytrack at Cagnes-Sur-Mer Jan. 17 and Feb. 24, Wusool came off second-best by a neck to Mer et Nuages and ahead of the subsequent G3 Prix de Guiche scorer and G1 Prix du Jockey Club fourth Intellogent (Ire) (Intello {Ger}) on very soft ground on his first turf encounter at ParisLongchamp Apr. 19. Undeterred by that reversal, the bay came out to make all and return to winning ways in another conditions race at Saint-Cloud May 14 but was granted a perfect lead here as the British raider set off in isolation. Jockey François-Xavier Bertras was not surprised by the performance. “He trotted up today as, in simple terms, the ground finally came right for him,” he explained. We were aware of his qualities and that is what we have adopted a softly-softly approach. He really is coming to himself.”

François Rohaut added, “The track favoured speed today and he had a very good leader. For the first time he had his perfect ground and he showed what he was capable of today. He has considerable scope for progress, especially as he arrived at the stable very late, August to be precise, after having growth problems. He's a very sweet colt and one which we can have the right to dream with. He has the
physique and the pedigree to become a very good horse. We didn't run him in the Poule d'Essai des Poulains, as we thought that he was too inexperienced. I think our patience will be rewarded.”

Torrestrella, who never managed to reproduce her Classic form for this stable, produced the six-length 2014 G3 Premio Carlo E Francesco Aloisi winner Farmah, also by Speightstown and trained in the same yard. A few months later, the Roger Varian-trained Intilaaq (Dynaformer) captured the G3 Rose of Lancaster S. at Haydock and looked to have a bright future only to come unstuck as a 4-year-old. Sadly, Wusool is her last as she died in his foaling year. Her half-sister Torrealta (GB) (In the Wings {GB}) produced the dam of last year's Poule d'Essai des Pouliches third Heuristique (Ire) (Shamardal), while another of her half-sisters Aqua Ring (Jpn) (Anabaa) is responsible for Queens Ring (Jpn) (Manhattan Cafe {Jpn} who captured the 2016 G1 Queen Elizabeth II Cup and G2 Fuchu Himba S. and was second to Kitasan Black (Jpn) (Black Tide {Jpn}) in the recent G1 Arima Kinen. This is also the family of the G2 Jockey Club Cup hero and G1 Hong Kong Cup runner-up Secret Weapon (GB) (Choisir {Aus}), the G3 Prix du Lys winner and stakes-producing Airmail Special (Ire) (Peintre Celebre) and Spanish Horse of the year Diego Valor (Fr) (Le Havre {Ire}).
