Sol Kumin, part owner of undefeated Lady Eli (Divine Park) and GI Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint victress Wavell Avenue (Harlington), has been named New Owner of the Year, OwnerView announced Tuesday. The award honors a new Thoroughbred owner who has been successful in the sport and has made a positive impact on the industry.

Kumin, who hails from the greater Boston area, purchased his first Thoroughbred in 2014 and submitted the winning bid for 2014 GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf winner Lady Eli one month later. He has helped create six different racing partnerships and has an ownership interest in over 65 racehorses, including stakes performers such as Slumber, Undrafted, Stallwalkin' Dude and Dacita (Chi).

As the CEO and founder of Folger Hill Asset Management, Kumin has brought a wide spectrum of new faces into the game, and has also been instrumental in supporting Thoroughbred retirement initiatives. He donated a portion of earnings from each of his Breeders' Cup entrants to the New Vocations racehorse adoption program.

“I am honored to be given this award for New Owner of the Year,” Kumin said. “I feel extremely lucky to have been introduced to horse racing at this stage in my life. In a short period of time, I have been fortunate enough to win some races and form some incredible friendships that I know I will have for many years to come.”

The award will be presented to Kumin at the Thoroughbred Owner Conference at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Florida, in January.
