Shaman Ghost's Sedburys Ghost Runs Them Down Late to Win Plate Trial at Woodbine

Sedburys Ghost | Michael Burns

Sedburys Ghost came flying late to take the Plate Trial Stakes and throw his name into the mix for next month's King's Plate, a race won by his sire in 2015. The 7-1 shot settled in midpack around the first turn as Scorching prompted the pace set by longshot Unbridled Weather and favored Notorious Gangster trailed the field. The pack began bunching up as the half went up in :47.22 and second choice Scorching took charge into the far turn, but Sedburys Ghost was inching ominously through traffic with Notorious Gangster following in his wake. Sedburys Ghost burst out of the pack into the stretch, overtook Scorching in deep stretch and was pulling clear as Notorious Gangster tried in vain to catch him late.

“I kind of like the pace in a way, because I knew he'd close, and Ryan found a good trip,” said trainer Barb Minshall. “I knew if he found clean run at the end, at top of the lane, I was really confident in him today. I have to say we were confident.”

Owner and breeder Yawen Wu added, “It's very exciting because it's kind of a struggle, where you have a small amount of mares. But now this just gave me confidence, and I'm thinking, you know, I will probably get some more.”

Sedburys Ghost, a maiden winner going 5 1/2 furlongs at this oval last June, returned from nearly a year on the sidelines to win a six-furlong optional claimer June 8. He stretched out to 1 1/16 miles to be fourth in the GIII Marine Stakes last time out June 28.

Hurricane Mimi, a half-sister to multiple stakes winner Sevla (Forest Wildcat), has a 2-year-old full-sister to the winner and produced a filly by Souper Speedy this year. Click for the Equibase.com chart or VIDEO, sponsored by FanDuel TV.
