Runaway Again Gives Stronach Stable A Second Straight Prince Of Wales Win

Hard Spun | Darley

It was an 8-1 upset Tuesday in the Prince of Wales Stakes at Fort Erie as Runaway Again pushed past the tiring King's Plate winner Mansetti in the final strides to win the second leg of the Canadian Triple Crown.

A debut maiden special weight winner at Woodbine going 1 1/16 miles, Runaway Again endured a rough trip and came home an eased-up 10th in the King's Plate over the Tapeta Aug. 16. With just two prior starts to his name, the Stronach Stables-owned gelding came in as the least experienced runner in the field. Off to a smoother beginning Tuesday, Runaway Again split the field in fourth close to the pace as Mansetti faced early pressure up front through fractions of :46.96. Still with plenty of ground to make up on the race favorite at the quarter pole, jockey Ryan Munger kept asking Runaway Again to find more and the gelding kept coming as Mansetti desperately needed the line. It didn't come in time as Runaway Again was able to push past in the shadow of the post to spring the upset. Stronach Stables also co-owned the 2024 Prince of Wales Stakes winner in Vitality (Street Boss).

The 113th stakes winner for Hard Spun, he is out of an unraced Storm Cat first dam who has produced five winners from six to race. Notably, that mare is a half-sister to MGISW and champion 2-year-old colt Macho Uno (Holy Bull) as well as MGISW and sire Awesome Again (Deputy Minister). Frank Stronach bought into the family when he picked up Runaway Again's second dam for $95,000 at Keeneland January in 1992. Golden Venus passed away in 2023 with her last foal being the now 2-year-old Mucho Maho Man gelding Apolloman.
