June 21, 2025 - Newmarket, Race 2, GBP £10,000, 7f, 2yo
Dam: Lumiere (GB) (Hwt. Filly-Eng, G1SW-Eng, $329,674 , by Shamardal
Owner: Godolphin
Breeder: Godolphin (Ire)
Trainer: Charlie Appleby
Godolphin ran one-two in the seven-furlong Newmarket opener just not with the horse the market expected, as Pacific Avenue (Dubawi) stole a march on his Charlie Appleby stablemate and 'TDN Rising Star' Wild Desert (Too Darn Hot) to earn a 'Rising Star' badge of his own. Godolphin's Ancient Truth (Dubawi) won the 2024 edition of this race prior to taking the G2 Superlative Stakes and running third in the G1 Dewhurst Stakes.
The son of G1 Cheveley Park Stakes heroine and fellow 'Rising Star' Lumiere (Shamardal) settled in a tugging second while keeping a close eye on Commander's Intent (Victor Ludorum) who led the way over Newmarket's July course. A bit keen in the early going, the 9-1 shot focused on business under Dougie Costello and found another gear to challenge the pacesetter inside the final two furlongs. Meanwhile the 30-100 crowd's pick Wild Desert had been trapped against the fence in third throughout and had to wait before shifting off the inside and launching his attack. That delay proved decisive, as Pacific Avenue held the more experienced runner by a head at the line.
A Godolphin homebred and the 46th 'Rising Star' for his sire, the grey is a full-brother to the smart G3 Darley Stakes winner Highland Avenue and a half to G2 Cape Verdi heroine Silver Lady (Sea The Stars). His 3-year-old half-sister, the winner Dancing Flame (Siyouni), ran fourth in the Prix Etoile de la Reine at Compiegne earlier in the day. His yearling half-sister is by Sea The Stars, while Lumiere foaled a full-brother to Pacific Avenue this term.
Pacific Avenue comes from a long line of Darley-bred mares, with his dam a full-sister to GI E. P. Taylor Stakes heroine Sheikha Reika. Third dam Actoris (Diesis) was stakes placed in France, while his winning fourth dam was a half-sister to G2 Falmouth Stakes victress Superiority (Arazi). The Exclusive Native mare Outstandingly, bred by Harbor View Farm like 1978 Triple Crown hero Affirmed (also by Exclusive Native), is the fifth dam of the winner. That American Champion 2-Year-Old Filly won both the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies and the GI Hollywood Starlet Stakes in 1984 and is part of a noted American dynasty tracing to La Mesa (Round Table). She joined the Darley broodmare band after selling for $1.15 million at the Fasig-Tipton November Sale in 1988, carrying to Caro. Lifetime Record: 1-1-0-0, £5,154.
