'Rising Star' Sassy C W Much The Best In The Astoria

Sassy C W | Sarah Andrew

Sassy C W put in a 'TDN Rising Star'-worthy performance in her Churchill debut Apr. 30, going gate to wire with the race notes simply stating “rocket ship” to become the first winner for her freshman sire (by Uncle Mo). Just over a month later, the 2-5 favorite went a furlong further in similar style to give Yaupon his first stakes winner in Thursday's Astoria Stakes at Saratoga. Away the slowest of the quintet, Sassy C W wasted absolutely no time in rushing her way to the front and opened up a sizable advantage in the first furlong as Vernon Valley and Gena B gave chase from far back. Hand ridden by Jareth Loveberry around the turn through fractions of :21.92 and :45.41, the favorite put this field away and refused to be caught, coming in under wraps ahead of a strung-out group in her wake.

“She breaks so fast that [Loveberry] said the ground just broke out from underneath her,” said winning trainer Larry Rivelli. “I thought she'd be three in front as soon as they opened the gate. She's a pretty special filly. I was expecting her to do it, and she did, but when you're 2-5 it's always something anxious. We'll be selective about her spots. Hopefully we can keep her winning, but this was a big race for her. She's got a lot of talent, a lot of class.”

“I think she feels like a sprinter, but her gallop-out, she is galloping out great,” added Loveberry. “So who knows where to go from here. We've got a good filly and I'm thankful for the whole team.”

Sassy C W, a $375,000 OBS March grad for Carolyn Wilson this year, is out of Sassy Miss Sue, who sold for just $37,000 with the winner in utero at KEENOV in 2022 and was exported to Turkey in 2023. That full-sister to GISP Tiz Miz Sue reported a 2024 full-sister to Sassy C W.
