Pavel Puts Them On Ice in Smarty Jones Rout

Pavel | Equiphoto

Making just his third lifetime start, California invader Pavel shipped East for the second time in his career and absolutely dominated the field in the GIII Smarty Jones S. at Parx. Let go at 39-10, the $90,000 KEENOV buy stalked the pace of GIII West Virginia Derby Colonelsdarktemper (Colonel John) through moderate splits of :24 1/5 and :47 4/5. Sidling up to that one at the top of the lane, Pavel left the frontrunner in his dust soon after and never left the outcome in doubt from there, winning wrapped up in the final sixteenth by five lengths. Pavel is the sixth stakes winner for his sophomore sire (by Giant's Causeway).

Pavel was tabbed a 'TDN Rising Star' after a 4 1/2-length victory in his 6 1/2-furlong debut at Santa Anita July 1 and was immediately thrown into the deep end when shipped across the country for the July 29 GII Jim Dandy S. where he ran a respectable fourth while tackling seasoned graded stakes winners and the stretch-out to nine furlongs. He prepped for his return to the East Coast with a bullet six-furlong work in 1:12 at Del Mar Aug. 27.

Pedigree Notes:

Pavel's full-brother sold for $18,000 at this year's OBS June sale to trainer Saffie Joseph and was exported to Trinidad and Tobago. Mons Venus produced a filly by Fed Biz in 2016 and a colt by Carpe Diem this year before being bred back to Upstart. Airdrie Stud and WinStar Farm teamed up to purchase the unraced mare, in foal to Harlan's Holiday, for $250,000 at the 2012 Keeneland January Sale.
