Our Way Has His Way in Better Talk Now

Our Way | Sarah K. Andrew

Our Way continued his steady ascent into a quality 3-year-old turf runner by capturing Saratoga's Monday feature, the Better Talk Now S., to follow up a strong optional claiming win earlier this meet. The dark bay was winless in his first four starts before graduating against state-bred company on the Gulfstream turf Feb. 12. Tried next in the Sophomore Turf S. at Tampa Bay Downs Apr. 9, he finished a good second to GSW Life Imitates Art (More Than Ready). Third at 12-1 in a Belmont optional claimer June 3, Our Way impressed over course and distance July 23 by closing into a slow pace to win going away at 10-1.

Off as the second choice in this spot, the $140,000 OBS March buy settled second-last in the two path around the clubhouse turn, about a half-dozen lengths off a :23.83 quarter. Running in the clear down the backside, he saved ground while in tight on the far bend, split horses gamely at the top of the lane and flew down the center of the course to easily overtake the leaders and win going away by 2 1/4 lengths, becoming the fifth stakes winner for his sophomore sire (by Tiznow). Our Way's dam is a half to MGISW turfer Lady of Shamrock (Scat Daddy) and GSW Smooth Jazz (Storm Boot), while his second dam is a half to GISW turfer Royal Chariot (Strawberry Road {Aus}).

He's coming together and getting better,” winning trainer H. James Bond commented. “The horse has really matured. He's going to be a serious horse this fall. He's really getting it together now … We're stabled here and it's our backyard eight months a year. It's nice to win in front of our home crowd. I have great owners and a great crew.”

Winning pilot Jose Ortiz added: “I knew the rest of the field was going fast, so I took back a little bit. I was able to save some ground and follow Johnny [Velazquez, aboard Hammers Vision]. At the quarter pole, I swung out and had a ton of horse. He exploded.”
