Mike Maker and Florent Geroux won the Dueling Grounds Oaks in a romp with a horse that the conditioner claimed early in its career for $75,000. One race later, they did it again in with another $75,000 claim in the Dueling Grounds Derby with the more accomplished of the two, Oscar Nominated.

Plucked for that tag from breeder Amerman Racing and trainer Bill Mott, the chestnut captured the turfy Black Gold S. Feb. 27 at Fair Grounds and turned around to upset the GIII Horseshoe Casino Cincinnati Spiral S. over the Turfway synthetic oval Apr. 2. Oscar Nominated was then ambitiously spotted in the GI Kentucky Derby and finished 17th of 20. Back on the lawn in the GIII Penn Mile S. June 4, he checked in fifth, and narrowly missed when second as the favorite in the GIII American Derby July 9 at Arlington. Running fifth with traffic trouble there in the GI Secretariat S. Aug. 13, he was bet to second favoritism in this Sunday feature.

Away in good order, Oscar Nominated traveled in midpack as the field headed around the sharp first turn and down the backside. Patiently handled by the hot-riding Geroux, he moved to within striking distance after longshot leader Madtap (Tapit) left a mile behind in 1:40.25, powerfully swept to the front soon after straightening for home and drew well clear in the long stretch to post a convincing score. Path of David was up late for the place, while Cordon won a three-way photo for show honors. Airoforce (Colonel John), the 7-5 favorite, came up empty with no visible excuse, finishing seventh. The win was the fifth on the card for Geroux and the third for Maker. The pair took the Dueling Grounds Oaks with Try Your Luck and also conquered Saturday's GIII Kentucky Turf Cup with the inimitable Da Big Hoss (Lemon Drop Kid).
