Omaha Beach's Kappa Kappa Upsets GII Lexus Raven Run Stakes At Keeneland

Kappa Kappa (Omaha Beach) drew in off the also-eligible list and pulled off a 27-1 upset with a game victory in Saturday's GII Lexus Raven Run S. at Keeneland.

She jumped well from her outside draw beneath the hot-handed John Velazquez and vied for command while three deep through an opening quarter in :22.81.

Kappa Kappa enjoyed a narrow advantage at the top of the lane and battled back gamely after being headed in the stretch by Vodka With a Twist (Thousand Words) to win by a head. Favored 'TDN Rising Star, presented by Hagyard' Ragtime (Union Rags) rallied late for third.

“She showed a lot of heart,” Velazquez said.

“She found herself at the three-sixteenths pole in front, the other horse (Vodka With a Twist) passed her and then she came back and put up a good fight. Finally, I went back to left-handed and she responded nicely. Very nicely done.”

Kappa Kappa entered off a last-out, field-best 90 Beyer Speed Figure in an allowance win versus state-breds at Parx Sept. 19. All three of her previous career starts were at Parx.

“She's been beating up on horses in the fields pretty easily up in Philly (at Parx Racing), so she certainly showed some gameness today like we hoped she would,” winning trainer Butch Reid said. “I knew she had the talent, but obviously she showed today she has the heart to go along with it.”

Pedigree Notes:

Kappa Kappa, a $65,000 EASOCT purchase, becomes the eighth graded/25th stakes winner for Omaha Beach. The winning broodmare Pharoah's Princess, an $80,000 purchase by Ed Price at the 2019 KEENOV sale, had a filly by Tiz the Law this year.
