NY-Bred Posse Colt Takes the Amsterdam

Mind Your Biscuits | Sarah Andrew

New York-bred Mind Your Biscuits proved that his blowout state-bred allowance victory with blinkers added downstate July 4–good for a 94 Beyer–was legit with this impressive performance in his first try versus open company.

Trailing the field of seven early as Maniacal led through an opening quarter of :22.36, the chestnut avoided trouble and was checked slightly on the far turn as Quijote (Pomeroy) checked dramatically off heels and dropped back sharply. Slipping through a very inviting opening along the rail in the lane, Mind Your Biscuits kicked on nicely to blow past the pacesetter and win going away.

This is first stakes winner for trainer Robert Falcone Jr. The 22-year-old native of Brooklyn, N.Y., is in his third year of training and currently has 15 horses in training. Winning co-owner J Stables also campaigns GI Mother Goose S. heroine Off the Tracks (Curlin).

“He's a racehorse,” Falcone Jr. said of the winner. “He loves his job. This [win] means a lot. I'm just happy to be here–it's the greatest horses, the best trainers and the best jockeys, it's just great. But to win on a day like this is really something.”

He continued, “[This win] wasn't really a surprise. We always knew he was a good horse. I think the blinkers on really turned the corner–it really was the finishing touches for him. He matured a lot, too, since he has been in my barn. Every race he would run, he would come back and mature more. It looked like Joel [Rosario] had to check to get around [Quijote]. It looked like a little interruption for us. For that to happen, and for him to have to check like that, and to still make that move, was really impressive.”

Mind Your Biscuits was winless in four starts at two for trainer Roderick Rodriguez, but ran well in defeat behind nice company, including a third-place finish in the New York Breeders' Futurity at Finger Lakes last October. Transferred to Falcone Jr., he romped in the mud at the Big A in his sophomore debut Apr. 9, then followed a third-place finish in a first-level allowance May 7 with a runner-up effort in the Mike Lee S. at Belmont May 30.

The unraced Toccet mare Jazzmane, a half-sister to Canadian champion Kimchi (Langfuhr), has a 2-year-old filly by Posse and a yearling colt by Officer.

Tom Amoss Tweeted that Quijote clipped heels on the far turn, suffered a deep cut on his right front ankle and was walking sound back in the barn.
