A model of consistency in Europe's premier middle-distance races throughout 2025, Godolphin's Ombudsman (Night Of Thunder) teed himself up perfectly for another productive campaign when making light of a five-month absence to run out a smooth winner of Saturday's $5-million G1 Dubai Turf Sponsored by DP World at Meydan.
Bettered only by Calandagan (Gleneagles) when last seen filling the runner-up spot in a vintage edition of the G1 Champion Stakes at Ascot back in October, Ombudsman faced nothing of that calibre in this 1,800-metre contest and duly proved himself a notch above his 10 rivals.
Settled in mid-division as Japanese raider Gaia Force (Kitasan Black) took the field along in the early stages, Ombudsman peeled wide under William Buick on the home turn to guarantee a clear run. Shaken up soon after, he then showcased his trademark turn of foot to gain what would ultimately prove a decisive advantage, leading home Quddwah (Kingman), representing Simon and Ed Crisford, and the running-on Andreas Vesalius (Caravaggio) by two lengths in a time of 1:47.46.
It was a first success in the Dubai Turf for Buick, but a fourth for John Gosden, who trains the five-year-old in partnership with son Thady. Lord North (Dubawi) previously won three consecutive editions for the team at Clarehaven Stables, with the final two legs of that hat-trick being achieved with Thady on the licence in 2022 and 2023.
“I was delighted with him in every way and he's a big and strong horse – he's five now and fully matured,” said John Gosden. “I liked that he was fresh but didn't pull – William said that he listened and settled. They did the usual thing of going quick then pulling it up on the bend. William crept close and I think where he was correct was by staying wide and giving away ground, because when they straightened up he had a clear run.”
The Dubai Turf is a “Win and You're In” for the GI Breeders' Cup Mile at Keeneland in the autumn, with Gosden reporting that a return to Royal Ascot for the Prince Of Wales's Stakes will be next on the agenda for the winner.
It was last year's Prince Of Wales's Stakes that delivered the Group 1 breakthrough for Ombudsman, whose other top-level triumph in the Juddmonte International was sandwiched in between runner-up efforts in the Coral-Eclipse and Champion Stakes.
Gosden added, “He was probably 90% today, and I think it is one where the race will bring him on, but there is a bit of a gap now before Royal Ascot because they don't put a lot of these races on. He's come here off a long winter, but we've been very happy with his training.
“I think you are looking at the Prince Of Wales's Stakes, Eclipse, Juddmonte International – those are the obvious big summer races. William was hinting that, if you did want to go further at the end of the year, over a mile and a half, you could. I did talk about a Japan Cup last year but, if you remember, a certain horse called Calandagan was going for it, that old gelding, and I thought we might stay away from him.
“I'm sure he will go to stud at the end of the year, so let's be bold with him. Sheikh Mohammed is keen to take things on.”
On this 30th anniversary of the first Dubai World Cup meeting, Sheikh Mohammed was in attendance to welcome one of his leading lights into the Meydan winner's enclosure, with Buick keen to pay tribute to the Godolphin boss.
He said, “Congratulations Dubai. We have some beautiful racing. It's a pleasure to be part of and Ombudsman showed there, first run of the year, what he can do. It was how we hoped it would happen, very smooth, and he's going to have a very exciting year ahead.
“It's an honour for me to ride for Godolphin and His Highness. Dubai World Cup night is the biggest night in horse racing, so to represent His Highness on his best horses and to have winners is a dream come true.”
Ed Crisford said of Quddwah, “This sort of style of racing he really enjoys, being tucked in and not an end-to-end gallop. He had a dream run up the rail, finished well, and Ombudsman is obviously a fantastic horse as he showed last year.
“He's a nice horse that can be winning some good races. I think he can win a Group 1 – he's been knocking on the door. He just needs the right sort of track and the right style of racing. I think he can do it.”
Pedigree Notes
Bred by James Hanly of Ballyhimikin Stud, Ombudsman was purchased by Stroud Coleman Bloodstock for 340,000gns at Book 2 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale. He is the second foal out of the winning Dansili mare Syndicate, a 25,000gns Juddmonte cast-off at the 2017 Tattersalls December Mares Sale. Syndicate herself is a full-sister to the G3 Premio Carlo Vittadini hero Runnymede, as well as the dual Listed scorer and G2 Celebration Mile runner-up Stipulate.
Ombudsman's fourth dam is All At Sea (Riverman), who won the G1 Prix du Moulin de Longchamp and also finished second in both the Oaks and Juddmonte International. From the family of Twice Over (Observatory), who counted the Juddmonte International among his quartet of top-level victories, Syndicate is also responsible for the unraced three-year-old Synchronicity, a full-sister to Ombudsman who fetched 900,000gns from SackvilleDonald at Book 1 of the October Yearling Sale. She also has a juvenile filly by Ten Sovereigns named Syndicale.
