Mid American (Epicenter) earned the first black-type for freshman sire Epicenter (by Not This Time) when he sailed home a winner in the Kentucky Downs Juvenile Turf Sprint on Saturday.
The Jimmy DiVito trainee was well-beaten on the dirt at Ellis July 17, but in his second start–which came on the grass at the Pea Patch Aug. 9–the chestnut found his footing and won by 3 1/4 lengths.
As a 5-1 shot here, Mid American came firing at the bell, but was taken in hand as the field headed for the far turn. The colt worked his way through some traffic and dove towards the rail which was a solid move for the stretch drive. The juvenile had plenty of speed left in reserve and he scampered to the wire to deliver the score over Good to Be King (War Front).
The winner is his dam's last recorded foal on record, but she was entered in Barnes's book for next season. Wampum Girl is a half-sister to GISW Bordonaro (Memo {Chi}) and MSW Miss Empire (Empire Maker). Under Mid American's third dam we find the dam of Horse of the Year Bricks and Mortar (Giant's Causeway).
