McStay Starts Own Agency

Mark McStay and John Ferguson

Mark McStay, formerly with Darley and Godolphin for 15 years, has launched McStay Bloodstock. Based in Newmarket, McStay will work on his own as well as in partnership with John Ferguson Bloodstock.

McStay grew up on his family's Oaklawn Stud beside The Curragh and is a graduate of University College Dublin and the Smurfit Business School. During his time with Darley and Godolphin McStay worked in nominations sales and as Godolphin Bloodstock Manager, and he also spent time in Kentucky and Australia. McStay is the co-breeder of Group 1 winner Covert Love (Ire) (Azamour {Ire}) and was responsible for the purchase of Group 1-winning fillies Dubawi Heights (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) and Miss Keller (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}).

“The global perspective given to me during my time at Godophin was fantastic and to get to work with such a fantastic group of people and top-class horses has been the best of educations,” said McStay. “Being involved in the stud careers of Cape Cross and Dubawi from the very start and watching horses such as Barney Roy, Harry Angel, Pleascach and Ribchester at home and on the track in recent years has been highly fulfilling. I've always enjoyed both the breeding and commercial aspect of the industry so going out on my own was the next step.”

Of his partnership with Ferguson, McStay said, “It's a natural one: we worked closely and successfully together for many years. John has great insights and a huge network of contacts globally and I believe together we will be in a position to provide a bespoke service to clients, helping them to achieve their goals.”
