A series of house rules at racetracks in the state of Maryland that were announced Oct. 24, will likely not be implemented until at least February 2020, the Maryland Racing Commission decided Thursday. The rules were intended to be put into use at various stages, some immediately and some as late as February.
“Certain folks were upset because of the not only the substance of the changes but also the timing and why is the Commission doing this,” said Commission chairman Michael Algeo in a report on The Racing Biz website.
According to the website, several trainers expressed concern on certain items, in particular one rule that stipulated that the administration of Lasix come four hours ahead of a race instead of three as well as a new requirement that would push the administration of NSAIDs out to 48 hours from 24.
“We all want to make certain that everybody's heard, so what we're going to do is delay for a very brief period, I would anticipate, so that we can sit down, have them share their concerns,” Alego said. “It may result in some modifications, changes.”
