Athens Queen was one of several debut-winning juveniles for 2-year-old king Wesley Ward at Keeneland, wiring an Apr. 19 test to graduate by a neck. Sent off at 11-1 in this black-type bow, the bay ran two wide near the back of the tightly bunched group through an opening quarter in :22.06. Ranging up four wide turning for home, Athens Queen forged clear of a her three rivals left in contention to win by a neck. Lady Apple was the runner-up, as heavily favored 'TDN Rising Star' Tijori (Will Take Charge) battled early only to fade to fourth late.
“She was always a nice filly from day one, we started breezing her over at Turfway in March, and she showed a lot of talent,” Ward said of the winner. “She wasn't at this level like she was today so it looks like she's getting better.”
