Second to Nitrogen (Medaglia d'Oro) in the both the GIII Florida Oaks and the GII Edgewood Stakes at 1 1/16 miles in her last two starts, Lush Lips (GB) finally broke through to the win Saturday in the Tepin Stakes at the mile at Churchill Downs. Shortened up for the first time since she made her North American debut a the mile at Kentucky Downs last summer, the 8-5 favorite had shown early speed in all of her prior races bar two but was relegated back in this spot to near the rear of the field while clearly unhappy about it as pacesetter Something Stronger (Justify) worked through fractions of :24.13 and :47.96. Stuck back in fifth but settled up the outside, Lush Lips began to gain ground on the leaders around the far turn, swung widest of the contenders into the stretch and put in a furious closing kick to take over from longshot Ninth Island (Constitution). Both Princess Attitude and Nitrogen gave chase but Lush Lips had first jump and won going away by a widening 3 3/4 lengths.
The 10th stakes winner for Ten Sovereigns, Lush Lips is out of a winning Arcano (Ire) half-sister to German MGSW Electric Beat (GB) (Shinko Forest {Ire}) while another half-sister produced GSW/G1SP Melo Melo (GB) (Gleneagles {Ire}) and MGSW Treasuring (GB) (Havana Gold {Ire}). Lush Lips herself has a yearling half-brother by Harry Angel (Ire) who is her dam's last reported foal.
