Despite receiving little attention on the tote board, Embouteillage (Kingman {GB}) soared right on by the 2-1 race favorite Rockabye (Flightline) and won going away, graduating on debut at Saratoga Wednesday.
Given only a 15-1 chance, the homebred for Wertheimer et Frere broke evenly in the middle of the pack from stall three and was able to save all the ground against the hedge as Rockabye, making her second start, led early inside of rail-drawn longshot Shinobu (Munnings).
An advancing third behind that pair into the far turn but joined on the outside by another longshot in Oh Come On (Munnings), Embouteillage was given a patient ride by Hall of Famer John Velazquez who sat chilly behind that three-wide wall at the quarter pole before hitting the gas as racing room opened up down the center of the course.
Rockabye had gotten first jump inside and was clear at the sixteenth pole but Embouteillage had all the momentum and was able to wear that favorite down, surging past easily close to home to pick up the stylish win by 1 1/4 lengths.
'Insighted' runner Without Hesitation (Jackie's Warrior), the top-priced filly at this year's OBS April Sale at $2.3-million, took extra time to load pre-race and never factored, checking in a mid-pack fifth.
“She's quick, and the stallion was a miler and he produces quick horses,” trainer Graham Motion told Maggie Wolfendale after the race. “I wasn't surprised [that she showed speed] and I figured as long as she [broke] well. I felt pretty good when I saw John [Velazquez] sitting in that pocket down the backstretch.”
Embouteillage is a daughter of GSW Mitchell Road, a mare who banked north of $619,000 on the track and now has two winners from three to race. And while she did her racing on the turf, the mare's half-brother, a horse by the name of Country House (Lookin At Lucky), took down one of the top dirt races in his controversial upset of the GI Kentucky Derby in 2019. The family also includes GSW/MGISP Breaking Lucky (Lookin At Lucky) who took his own leg of the Canadian Triple Crown with a win in the 2015 Prince of Sales Stakes.
Mitchell Road has a yearling Into Mischief filly named Desobeissante and a weanling Nyquist filly who has been named Routiere. She visited Justify for the 2027 foaling season.
