Injured Dettori Returns Sunday, Castellano Plans to Resume Oct. 3

Javier Castellano and Frankie Dettori have both set tentative dates for their returns after sustaining injuries over the past month, according to Daily Racing Form.

Castellano, who sustained a fracture to his hand during a fall in the GIII Saranac Stakes at Saratoga Aug. 30, was cleared to ride Tuesday and will mark his return at Aqueduct Oct. 3, according to his agent P.J. Campo.

Undergoing surgery Sept. 4 to insert three pins to secure his hand, Castellano had the pins removed Tuesday.

Dettori, who suffered a shoulder dislocation at Belmont at the Big A Sept. 19, is expected to return to the saddle at Aqueduct Sept. 29 to ride in the GII Miss Grillo Stakes.

“He said movement's good. He's going to be in a little bit of pain but he could start as soon as he wants,” agent Ron Anderson told DRF.

The Italian rider was injured in the last race of the Sept. 19 card, a maiden turf sprint.

Dettori will be based at Keeneland this fall, starting with the Lexington oval's kick off date of Oct. 4.
